Tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad today: All passengers and crew killed

Today, India witnessed one of the worst aviation disasters in its modern history, as an Indian Airlines flight (Flight No. 171), a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed a few minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.

The plane was heading to London Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Indian and international authorities have confirmed that there are no survivors of the accident.

According to eyewitnesses, the plane crashed in a crowded residential area in the Megani Nagar neighborhood, causing huge explosions and the ignition of massive fires, whose columns of thick smoke could be seen kilometers away. The plane crashed into a building belonging to the PG Medical College, which increased the number of casualties on the ground.

Civil defense and ambulance teams rushed to the site of the accident, and Indian Army forces participated in rescue operations and removing the wreckage. Specialized teams from the Indian Civil Aviation Authority were sent to investigate the causes of the accident, with the participation of British and American international teams.

It was announced that the passengers were of multiple nationalities, most notably 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian. The plane issued a distress call shortly after take-off, before disappearing from radar screens.

Indian authorities declared national mourning, and all flights were temporarily suspended at Ahmedabad Airport. Many public figures and celebrities also expressed their deep sadness, emphasizing the gravity of the tragedy and the need to hold those responsible accountable if there were technical or human errors.

Victim identification is still ongoing, while the investigation continues amid a state of grief and shock that has spread throughout the country.
